Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee announced yesterday that the university has adopted a policy that would require all copy paper used on campus to have at least 30 percent recycled content, according to a university press release.
The move will be an expensive one for the university, costing about $300,000, but it is money well spent and it is good to see that the current administration is willing to spend a little extra on environmental issues.
But why only 30 percent? Hopefully that number will rise in the coming years, so OSU can move toward being even more environmentally friendly.
The Lantern also applauds efforts from student groups such as Students for Sustainable Campus and Free the Planet, who have fought hard for Gee to approve such a policy.
This also illustrates how Gee listens to students and considers their concerns; Free the Planet protested outside his office and made sure he knew how much the issue meant to them.
Though this was a good step toward improving OSU's green initiatives, there is still much work to be done. We need to try harder to be a leader in environmental efforts rather than trying to catch up with others.

Let's see, OSU will spend $300,000 so they can recycle 30% of copy paper. Nothing is said about the amount of money the university will be saving, so I assume the answer is $0. (Continued…)
