It still could be worse

On the front of Tuesday's Sports section, The Lantern ran a photo of two firefighters battling a business fire in South Korea with the headline, "It could be worse." No one on the staff, myself included, thought of Sept. 11, nor is this a picture of Sept. 11. This has raised a good question for debate: When we see smoke and firefighters, do our minds automatically assume it is Sept. 11? Isn't the end goal of terrorism for us to continue to live in fear and associate every image with that day? The Lantern would never make light of such a catastrophe. We simply wanted Buckeye fans to know, it could be worse. A football loss isn't the end of the world. Neither is this image.

The Lantern's editor-in-chief makes a pretty lame rationalization of a bad editorial decision.

I took it as the most recently reported massive firefighting effort in the US, the California wildfires.

So you would never make light of a catastrophe such as 9/11, but you would make light of a catastrophe such as a massive business fire in South Korea? That's what I took away from this. (Continued…)

You should still step down for making OSU look this bad. If you were trying to state that it is just football and just a game- then use a positive image and highlight OSU's accomplishment. (Continued…)

I took it as what it was supposed to be, a joke. Lighten up people. He's right, people in this town make such a big deal of OSU football, and it COULD be worse. (Continued…)

You have some nerve to compare a football loss to a scene where fire fighters are risking their lives. This really makes the university look terrible. (Continued…)

It's still in poor taste. If you are hoping for a career in the news media it's not the sort of thing that will reflect well upon you. Just let it go. (Continued…)

How could you not think of September 11th? At what point did this seem to be a good idea? I think you underestimate Columbus and Ohio State in thinking that we aren't smart enough to understand that it was one game in a lifetime of games. (Continued…)

I don't see why this image should provoke thoughts of 9/11. There are fires all over the place that firemen try to extinguish. Even ones that we don't know about. (Continued…)

I thought it was the wreck in Florida on the highway because of the timing. Not sure I saw the original, but the email asking what people thought came on the day of the wreck if I recall. (Continued…)
