Perhaps those running as well as driving in the CABS services should study the Kent State/PARTA relationship. Great campus bus service for years.

It doesn't matter who you are (BRUTUS). Driving around campus is a dangerous thing. Even though pedestrians have the right away when they're on campus, drivers and students still have to use common sense. On several occassions, I've been on a CABS bus where the bus driver cuts someone off, skips stops people need, shuts the back door on people, and on one occassion hit the CABS bus in front of it at a stop. I'm not saying that the student that got hit isn't to blame either. Several students walk around campus with their heads down and don't look around especially when crossing the streets and he's probably one of them.

The buses on this campus our horrible. I LOOK both ways and have still had buses stop a foot from my leg. I was well in the crosswalk before the buses were even close. The CABS drivers are horrible.

Well, why wouldn't they let students drive? They let them drive for the same reason they let you drive a car: the driver is fully licensed for their particular class of vehicle. And there are definitely worse full time drivers than some of the students.

I'm not sure about your High Street situation, but if it was at 15th and High, many times cars are so intent on getting around the bus that is trying to move into the left lane after leaving the bus stop in the curb lane that they will go into oncoming traffic (even if they have plenty of time to yield to the bus) just to gain a few seconds of travel time (and then end up being right in front of the bus at every red light). Use your brains, people: getting there a few seconds sooner because you beat the bus isn't worth risking your life. The 15-ton block of steel is always going to win in a collision with your little car.

why would they let students drive the cabs anyway?
one time on north high st, a cabs bus switched lane when i was right beside him, ran me to the other side of the road.
i was right beside his driver's seat! he didn't even check if anyone was beside him when he switched the lane.
and i'm sure he is a student because he look pretty young.
wth, learn to drive!

I have often wondered why Ohio State students dont look when crossing the street. Then they act mad because you almost hit them.

Whether you are a pedestrian, bicyclist or motorist- 1. USE COMMON SENSE 2. USE COMMON COURTESY. This is obviously too much for most students to understand. I am very surprised there are not more fatalities.

Actually, I was waiting for that exact bus to take me to the career fair. However, the bus did not stop where he supposed and instead kept on going on Woodruff faster than what cars and busses usually go during the daytime. The driver make a sharp turn and didn't stop at Woodruff for the first stop and just kept going until he hit the kid.

I was driving the other way when this happened and probably had the best angle on the whole thing. The kid walked out in the crosswalk without looking at all and the bus had half a second to react. It was more his fault than anything because he was walking reallly fast and didn't look at all. The bus was just pulling out of the stop on Woodruff and was coming up to speed and he basically walked into the side of it and fell down.

Nice journalism, Lantern. Of course you don't mention that he was jaywalking. Do you people just expect the bus to stop when someone steps in front of it? This guy literally walked in front of a moving bus.

That sucked... I tell you though, even if you are on the sidewalk those busses can get pretty close...

OSU is rulled by the students, don't even think about driving your car down one of the streets with out stopping, doesn't matter if the student is in the crosswalk or not...

Just wait until winter time when you have the combination of hoodies and iPods; nothing like having blinders and not being able to hear. Heck, sometimes people are so oblivious while walking that they walk into other people.

I think the bottom line is that folks need to realize that they actually have to be in the crosswalk to be yielded to and that using themself as a human traffic signal can have nasty results

I hope Mr. Sun is okay, but there is definitely a teachable moment here.

pedestrians hate drivers and drivers hate pedestrians... your own attitude changes depending on whether you're walking or behind the wheel, at least mine does.

my favorite is when a car slams on their brakes halfway through the crosswalk, expects you to cross and then rolls their eyes when you wave them on. my bad! it appeared as if you were just going to blow through the stop sign altogether...

Being a bus driver, pedestrians for the most part think that drivers owe it to them to stop on the drop of a dime. When driving through areas with crosswalks, no one drives at idling speeds. The speed limit is always at least 20mph. Judging crosswalks is based on anticipation. Not being required to stop, we are only to anticipate when someone is going to cross. Drivers slow down for such occasions, but undoubtedly there is always someone who darts out at last minute assuming you are going to stop and then gives a smug look of victory when you stop while they walk at record-breaking slow speeds. It is quite ridiculous. No one realizes how many of these instances are avoided by our bus drivers; they are only remembered for the rare instances that there is a bad result. CABS drivers avoid so many accidents daily, but there are some that either catch us off guard or are simply unavoidable. Buses take extra time to stop compared to bicycles and cars and people forget this simple fact. This was an accident. Accidents happen. Give the driver a break.

When I was a student at OSU living in the dorms on north campus, I hit another student with my car. He assumed that I saw him and walked in front of my truck while I was pulling our onto woodruff. It is probably just a coincidence but the student I hit and the "victim" from the article were both Asian. Pedestrians need to be more vigilant. My roommate at the time was a CABS driver and i know that he took special care to avoid idiots who don't pay attention. He also played n'sync and Michael Jackson over the speaker system in the buses.

be careful at what you say. no one knows what actually happened except for the people that were there when this happened.. it's fine to make generalizations but you shouldn't use it for any specific case or person. How would you feel if you got hit by some reckless cars/buses while being a responsible pedestrian, and everyone else says that most pedestrians are reckless, therefore you are reckless, and you totally deserved it?! It wouldn't be fair, would it?
